The department of material Science and engineering of Xiamen University is originated from Macromolecular Specialization set in 1960, developed from the major Material Chemistry as a pioneer in China. So far, the department has been making efforts in youth development, scientific research and social service, trying to achieve more honors and worldwide reputation for the college of Materials.
The department possesses a remarkable academic strength with one Primary Discipline Doctoral programs and 7 Secondary Discipline Doctoral programs of materials science, material physics and chemistry, Materials Process Engineering, Soft matters and functional materials, macromolecular chemistry and physics, Energy Efficiency engineering as well Nuclear engineering and materials. There are 1 major of bachelor degree, 8 majors of master degree and 7 majors in which Ph.D students will be enrolled. The department of material science and engineering has been classified as one of national level building points of characteristic speciality, while its bachelor experimental teaching center ranked as national experimental teaching demonstration center and the excellent engineer forster program of ministry of education of China.
Now the department has gathered a strong academic team of 18 professors with 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering,2 awarders of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 3 awarders of new century excellent talents(NCET). There are also 18 associate professors, 3 senior engineers and 8 lecturers making efforts together. With this highly competitive faculty and reasonable teacher optimization, the department are dedicated to cultivate excellent students with broad horizon, creative mind, firm knowledge as well as prominent research capability.
The department of material Science and engineering has several high-level laboratories: the state key laboratory of high performance ceramic fiber, the provincial key laboratory of advanced materials, the municipal key laboratory of fire protection materials, the provincial research center of ceramic fiber engineering, the provincial base of development of solid surface coating materials, the university key laboratory of advanced ceramics, the key laboratory of high performance metal materials of Xiamen, the key laboratory of fire protection materials of Xiamen.
A series of scientific products of high quality have been achieved especially in areas such as high performance ceramic material techniques and engineering, material design and low dimensional function materials, macromolecular materials and biomedical materials. The department has taken part in more than 200 projects, including National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) ,National Key Technologies Research and Development Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation and so forth. In recent 5 years, over 0.13 billion yuan of scientific funds has flowed to researches while more than 450 SCI articles has been published with 120 of them are in JCR.
The department of material science and engineering also has effective world-wide academic collaborations with universities in US, Japan, Germany, France and so on. High level international conferences like The Second Asia Symposium on Biomineralization, Seminar on the development of new materials, international seminar of metal glass, Tokyo Institute of Technology- Tsinghua University – Xiamen UniversitySymposium on AdvancedMaterials – were finely held
